Why govts should procure palliative vehicles from Nigeria – BKG

The governments at state and federal levels have been advised to ensure all vehicles to be used as part of measures of cushioning the hardship of the removal of fuel subsidy are purchased from automobile companies with visible dealerships and existence in the country.

Managing Director of BKG Exhibitions Limited, Mr Ifeanyichukwu Agwu, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
He noted that injecting the money into the Nigerian automotive industry would spur more activities to fast-track the development of the industry with the attendant socio-economic benefits to the people and economy of Nigeria.
He said, “We have companies in Nigeria that could meet up the demand as well as subsequent ones.”

Agwu, whose company organises the Lagos Motor Fair/Africa Autoparts Expo as well as the Abuja International Motor/Nigeria Autoparts Expo, noted that the sector had suffered serious setbacks for over a decade now owing to the poor attention paid to it by the government especially with the poor implementation of the government’s instituted National Automotive Industry Development Policy/Plan [NAIDP], which is in its 10th year.
He said, “No doubt, low sales and lack of clear-cut policy direction, amongst others, have been plaguing the industry which makes it to be in dire need of life support. Injecting the funds for the purchase of these vehicles will go a long way in restoring life and vibrancy to the industry.
“Procuring these vehicles from sources that are not playing big in the Nigerian market will only end in more capital flight out of the country and worsening the precarious state of the nation’s economy.
“More jobs will be created in the benefiting economies while unemployment persists in Nigeria.”
Agwu also said, “Most of the auto companies in Nigeria injected billions of Naira in setting up assembly plants in the country and have little or nothing to show for it.
“They must be encouraged and highly supported by the government through this and subsequent patronage.
“The government should not shut them out as used to the case in the past; they must enjoy this as they have suffered a lot plying their trade in the ever turbulent Nigerian market.”

The BKG boss whose company has been serving the automotive industry since 1998 through its motor fairs urged the government to consider using the automotive industry in driving Nigeria’s economic development.
“I urge the new government to ensure that the automotive sector of the Nigerian economy remains in the front burner of its economic policy and programmes from the onset,” he said.
According to him, the sector is so important that it shows physically the state of the economy and generates much revenue and creates enormous employment.
He said, “No serious government toys with it. It is a sector that affects virtually everything. If it is not rightly repositioned now, it will in the very near future negatively affect a whole lot in the life of the people and economy. “Government should therefore parley seriously with the sector stakeholders to seeing how it could be made better.”
Agwu also contended that Nigeria has the resources and capacity to become the hub of automotive business in the continent, adding that it would only be a big disservice to country and its people should other African countries do this ahead of Nigeria, especially in West Africa.
The BKG boss called on the government to ensure that the sector benefits immensely from the N75 billion it proposed to spend in rejigging the manufacturing sector; as it is the best assured sector to help the government in creating massive employment opportunities in the economy.
Agwu called on the government at all levels to actively participate in the forthcoming Abuja International Motor Fair and Nigeria Autoparts Expo scheduled to hold from November 13-17, 2023, where they would have the opportunity to meet all these companies and assess their capacities and capabilities.

Appeal court takes over NURTW case as NIC withdraws

The National Industrial Court has withdrawn from a case involving Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, Board of Trustees chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa’s ambition to return as president of the union over lack of jurisdiction.

The industrial court’s decision was made to avoid conflict with the Court of Appeal, where the matter is already being heard.

Before the NIC announced its decision to hands-off the case, the defendants’ counsel, Mr. O.I. Olorundare SAN, had informed the court that the matter is currently before the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, and that the industrial court could not continue to adjudicate on the same matter.

The counsel cited authorities to support his claim, adding that the National Industrial Court does not have concurrent jurisdiction with the Court of Appeal.

The presiding judge, O.O. Oyewunmi, struck out the case, stating that the Appeal Court had taken over the matter and that the Industrial Court must respect the hierarchy of courts.

Alhaji Yasin and six others took the case to the Appeal Court, challenging the decision of the industrial court recognising a delegates’ conference held on May 24, 2023, where Baruwa was proclaimed as President of the union for a second term in office.

With the latest NIC judgement, both parties will now proceed to defend their positions at the Court of Appeal and await the final judgement.

FRSC blames traffic violation as 19 passengers burnt to death in Okene Bypass accident

A total of 19 people were burnt to death in a tanker-bus collision on Sunday April 28 on Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State.

The collision that specifically occurred on Okene Bypass reportedly led to an explosion, trapping a total of 22 passengers in the inferno.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a statement which gave these details said the crash was largely caused by traffic rules violation.

It added that its emergency rescue team deployed in the area battled the situation for three hours.

Part of statement read, “The crash investigation report revealed that the crash involved two vehicles comprising a Dangote truck bearing the following registration details NSH680YJ, and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number KMC455ZE.

“The Toyota Hiace bus loaded from Kano was on its lane on the highway when the Dangote truck driver who drove all the way from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus.

“The impact of the collision resulted in a fire inferno that burnt the victims to death.

According to the report, the crash which was caused by route violation ‘One-way’ and wrongful overtaking, involved 22 people all male.

“Unfortunately, 19 people out of the 22 victims were killed and one injured.

“The remaining two victims who got rescued by the FRSC operatives without injuries survived the crash because they complied with traffic regulations on compulsory use of seatbelt.

“The corpses of the dead victims have been deposited at Okene General Hospital.

The statement signed by the FRSC spokesman, Jonas Agwu, an Assistant Corps Marshal, recalled that the Corps Marshal of the commission, Dauda Biu, at a press conference last week Thursday “warned against traffic violations citing instances where they resulted in avoidable crashes with fire outbreak, leading to wanton loss of precious lives and destruction to properties.

“As a result of that he had earlier emphasised on the need for maximum penalty for these drivers.

Dauda Biu reaffirmed the resolution of the Corps to continue its ongoing prosecution of drivers who by their actions cause road traffic crashes in Nigeria, noting that the driver of the truck involved in the Okene crash will not be an exception.

“As such, he called on the judiciary, leadership of transport unions and other relevant stakeholders in the road transportation sector to join hands with the Corps towards restoring sanity through speedy and effective prosecution.”
