Fayemi blasts Jonathan over 2012 subsidy stalemate, hails Tinubu’s boldness

Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has taken a swipe at ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, accusing him of lacking the political will to fully implement fuel subsidy removal in 2012, despite strong support from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF).

Fayemi made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference and Book Launch, while responding to comments by the Emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Sanusi had earlier commended President Bola Tinubu for scrapping the subsidy regime, but also pointed fingers at Tinubu for allegedly frustrating similar efforts during Jonathan’s tenure.

“I’ll be the first to give credit to this government for removing the fuel subsidy,” Sanusi said. “But the same President must take the blame for sabotaging the efforts to remove the fuel subsidy in the past, in 2012.”

Sanusi, who said he has consistently advocated for subsidy removal for over three decades, added: “The best time to have planted the tree was 25 years ago. The second-best time is now.”

Fayemi, however, countered the narrative that opposition parties were the main obstacle in 2012, insisting that governors were actually in favour of the policy shift.

“When we’re talking about the 2012 Occupy Nigeria and the opposition to President Jonathan, the truth of the matter was that the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, of which I was a member, were the major advocate for subsidy removal,” Fayemi said.

He acknowledged that his party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), opposed the move at the time, but noted that he and former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole actively campaigned for it.

Fayemi argued that Jonathan failed to follow through on his own policy, saying: “There’s something to be said for President Jonathan lacking the conviction to go ahead and do what he believed in.”

He praised President Tinubu for showing “political courage” by removing the subsidy immediately upon assuming office in May 2023.

“What did President Tinubu do? He came in and said subsidy is gone from day one. He could have opted out of it, especially when the pressure started mounting in the first month and prices began to rise. But he stayed on course,” Fayemi said.

However, he warned that the real test lies in managing the fallout from the policy.

“The devil is always in the details,” he said. “What has come after that is how to manage it so that the population does not feel a sense of loss as they are feeling at this particular point in time.”

Abuja: 33-Year-Old Nabbed While Writing FCT Promotion Exam For Father

A 33-year-old man, Monsuru Musa, has been arrested in Abuja after allegedly impersonating his father and sitting for a Federal Capital Territory Civil Service promotion examination on his behalf.

Musa was reportedly caught on Wednesday, October 7, during the third day of the examination organised by the FCT Civil Service Commission at an examination centre within the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) premises.

Security personnel monitoring the exercise reportedly apprehended him during the test as part of efforts to prevent examination malpractice and impersonation.

During questioning, Musa allegedly admitted that he was not the registered candidate and said he had taken the examination because his father, Musa Mohammed, was unwell.

Mohammed is an employee of the FCT Fire Service.

The younger Musa reportedly told officials that his father was between 67 and 68 years old. However, when questioned separately, Mohammed reportedly said he would turn 60 in February 2027.

The discrepancy prompted further questions from the authorities.

READ ALSO:

Mohammed reportedly confirmed that Musa was his biological son and admitted that he had asked him to sit for the examination because of his health condition.

During the questioning, the father reportedly said he completed primary school in 1977 and secondary school in 1982. He also said he travelled to Portugal in 1991 and started working in 2007.

Both father and son were subsequently taken through further questioning and made statements to Department of State Services (DSS) operatives before being handed over to the police for investigation.

The authorities are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged examination impersonation, including whether anyone else was involved and what action should be taken against the individuals.

The incident has renewed attention on efforts to protect the integrity of FCT civil service promotion examinations, particularly as the administration continues to adopt measures aimed at reducing malpractice.

The FCT Civil Service Commission has introduced computer-based testing for promotion exercises as part of efforts to improve transparency and strengthen the assessment process.

The latest incident highlights the authorities’ scrutiny of candidates appearing for promotion examinations and the requirement that registered candidates personally participate in the assessments.

The police investigation is ongoing, and no final decision has been announced on the case.

Yobe: 9-Year-Old Boy Burns Stepmothers, Brothers To Death In Revenge Attack

A nine-year-old boy has been arrested in Yobe State after allegedly setting his family home ablaze, killing his two stepmothers and two younger brothers in what police described as an act of revenge against his father.

The incident occurred in Rugan Badali, a hamlet in Karasuwa Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Yobe State Police Command, the boy had been accused of stealing a fowl and was subsequently beaten by his father.

Police said the boy allegedly bought matches the following day and set the family house on fire while his two stepmothers and two younger brothers were asleep.

The minor later confessed to the incident, telling Channels Television that he carried out the act because he was angry with his father for beating him.

READ ALSO:

The boy reportedly said he initially shouted for help after the fire started but did not disclose that he had caused the blaze. He allegedly confessed three days later following prayers, after which he was arrested and taken to Damaturu.

The police subsequently paraded the suspect alongside his father, identified as Abubakar Idi.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe, ASP Yusuf Adamu-Ali, said the suspect was a minor but would not simply be released, stressing that the case would be handled in accordance with the law.

The police spokesman also expressed concern over the incident, particularly because it occurred in a state still recovering from years of Boko Haram insurgency.

The case has raised fresh concerns about child behaviour, family conflict and the protection of vulnerable children, with police continuing to handle the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Olu of Warri Denies N2.7tn Pipeline Deal, Demands Evidence From Dokubo

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has rejected an allegation by Niger Delta activist Asari Dokubo that the monarch receives N2.7 trillion annually from pipeline surveillance contracts, challenging him to produce documentary evidence to support the claim.

The monarch’s position was conveyed by his Sole Representative to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its joint venture partners, Prince Collins Edema.

Edema described the allegation as unfounded and said it had been categorically rejected by the monarch’s representatives.

He challenged Dokubo to provide the documents on which the allegation was based, stressing that claims involving pipeline surveillance contracts should be subjected to proper scrutiny.

Dokubo had made the allegation while discussing pipeline surveillance arrangements in the Niger Delta, questioning why former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, had faced criticism over pipeline security contracts while, according to him, other individuals were allegedly receiving larger sums.

READ ALSO:

Dokubo alleged that the Olu of Warri and Osahon Idahosa were receiving N2.7 trillion annually for protecting oil pipelines.

However, the monarch’s representative rejected the claim and called for evidence to substantiate the allegation.

Edema argued that concerns over pipeline security arrangements should be addressed through relevant contracts, procurement records, corporate documents, government approvals and other verifiable records.

He also said allegations of wrongdoing should be directed to the appropriate government institutions for investigation rather than being settled through public accusations.

The controversy comes amid continued scrutiny of pipeline surveillance contracts in the Niger Delta, where private security arrangements involving former militant leaders and other stakeholders have generated public debate.

The security of oil pipelines remains a major issue for Nigeria because disruptions to crude oil production can affect government revenue, foreign exchange earnings and the broader economy.

The Olu of Warri’s representatives therefore maintained that anyone making claims about the monarch’s involvement in pipeline surveillance contracts should provide documentary evidence to support the allegations.

The monarch’s office has continued to deny the N2.7 trillion claim.
