Nigeria U-20 beat Tunisia 4-0, win bronze
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Friday recorded an emphatic 4-0 win over Tunisia in the third place match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-20 tournament.
The Nigerian team however missed a chance for an unprecedented eight title.
Ibrahim Muhammed gave the Flying Eagles an early lead, scoring the opening goal just nine minutes into the game.
The Tunisians, after the early setback, kept the Flying Eagles at bay for the remainder of the first half.
However, Ahmed Abdullahi made it 2-0 in Nigeria’s favour shortly after the half-time break.
In the 49th minute, Jude Sunday joined the scoring spree with a fantastic solo goal to extend the Flying Eagles’ lead to 3-0.
The young midfielder put the icing on the cake with another sumptuous finish during the stoppage time to effectively seal Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory.
Coach Ladan Bosso’s boys saved the best for last as this was their biggest win at the tournament in Egypt.
While Nigeria already are the record champion with eight titles, Friday’s victory also sealed the country’s place as the nation with the most AFCON U20 bronze medals in history.
Before now, Nigeria finished in third place in the 1995, 2009, and 2013 editions of the U20 Afcon.
Having ended their campaign on a high, the Flying Eagles will hope to get it right as they shift their attention towards the FIFA U20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Indonesia between 20 May and 11 June 2023.
Senegal and Gambia, the only two teams that defeated Nigeria’s Flying Eagles at this year’s AFCON U-20 tournament will be playing in the final.
The two teams have been formidable; winning all their matches without conceding any goal in the process.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, has commended the Flying Eagles for their third-place finish.
Describing the bronze medal as better than nothing, Dare urged the team to put to good use the lessons learnt at the tournament as they prepare for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May.
“We were disappointed we couldn’t play in the final or win this competition as we planned to but this convincing victory over Tunisia today (Friday) has redeemed some of the pain we felt last Monday after the Gambia game. A bronze medal is better than nothing.
“Now we have to also focus on doing a lot better at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May. There is very little time left but I believe the coaches now know where their focus should be in improving the team,” Dare added.

Atletico Open to Selling Lookman Months After €35m Signing
La Liga side Atletico Madrid are prepared to listen to offers for Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman just months after signing him from Atalanta in one of the winter window’s most significant deals. According to Fotospor, reports from Spain and Turkey indicate that the club may sanction his exit for roughly €60 million this summer. The development comes as a surprise given that Lookman only joined Diego Simeone’s side in February 2026 in a transfer worth approximately €35 million plus add-ons, signing a contract that runs until 2030.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a bright start to life in Madrid. He scored on his debut for Atletico in a 5-0 rout of Real Betis on February 5, 2026, finding the net in the 37th minute after just a couple of training sessions with his new teammates. “I’m very, very happy, very proud to make my debut tonight, especial performance from the team,” Lookman said after the match. “Obviously the team and the staff and everybody has welcomed me very nicely. It has made it easy for me to settle in.” His impact continued throughout the campaign, with Lookman playing a crucial role in securing Champions League qualification for Atletico. On May 12, 2026, he scored the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over Osasuna, converting a first-half penalty that mathematically guaranteed Atletico’s top-four finish in La Liga. However, despite contributing four La Liga goals alongside strikes in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League, Lookman has reportedly struggled to adapt to Atletico’s demanding defensive structure, and Simeone is claimed to have backed the club’s decision to pursue offers as part of a larger team overhaul. Since joining Atletico, Lookman has played 24 official matches for the club, scoring nine goals and providing four assists, contributing directly to 13 goals in 1,381 minutes of play.

Several Premier League clubs are expected to take note of the development right away. Arsenal is among those keeping an eye on developments, with manager Mikel Arteta said to admire Lookman’s mobility across the front line. Liverpool, who tracked the Nigerian during his time at Atalanta, is also interested, with his pressing tenacity and pace seen as a perfect fit for their style. Manchester United, another English team, is monitoring the situation, expressing a desire for more consistent output from their wide areas.
Outside England, Fenerbahçe are anticipated to renew their interest in Lookman, having previously been close to signing him before Atletico completed the deal in January. The Turkish giants had reached an agreement with both Lookman and Atalanta during the winter window, but the deal collapsed over bank guarantee issues. Galatasaray have also entered the race. According to Turkish media reports, the club’s star striker Victor Osimhen is providing positive references about his Nigerian international teammate to facilitate a potential move. Osimhen, who has reportedly been giving favorable recommendations about Lookman, is said to be ready to help convince the winger to join the Istanbul giants. Galatasaray’s biggest selling point is the opportunity to play in the Champions League, which could be a decisive factor in the Nigerian’s decision. Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to remain interested. In Italy, both Inter Milan and Juventus are admirers, although matching Atletico’s valuation of around €60 million and the player’s reported net salary of roughly €6 million per season may prove difficult for Serie A clubs.
Lookman’s move to Atletico Madrid was finalized after intense negotiations where the Spanish club outmaneuvered competition from Fenerbahce. The Nigerian international had endured a stormy relationship with Atalanta prior to his departure, requesting to leave the club citing broken promises and poor treatment. Lookman, who famously scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final for Atalanta in 2024 to end Bayer Leverkusen’s 51-game unbeaten run, registered 55 goals during his time in Bergamo. That performance made him the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a major European final and the first since 1975. He has previously played in England for Charlton Athletic, Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. His exceptional form earned him the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award in 2024, cementing his status as one of Africa’s top talents.
Despite reports of Atletico’s willingness to sell, some sources suggest the Spanish club now sees Lookman as an indispensable part of their sporting project following his standout performances, with any potential transfer requiring a fee closer to €70 million. As of the time of this report, no official decision has been made regarding Lookman’s future. The summer transfer window will determine whether the Nigerian international remains at the Wanda Metropolitano or seeks a new challenge elsewhere.

416 Arrested as PSG Champions League Celebrations Turn Violent in France
Clashes between football fans and security forces across France led to the arrest of 416 people following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) UEFA Champions League triumph over Arsenal.
Thousands of police officers were deployed across Paris and other parts of the country to contain unrest that disrupted road, rail and bus services in the French capital. According to French authorities, 22,000 law enforcement officers were deployed nationwide for the game, including 8,000 in Paris and its suburbs, after unrest marred PSG’s win in the competition last year. Paris tram lines were halted, several metro stations were shut, and bus traffic was stopped in certain areas in a bid to minimise disturbances.
Celebrations erupted after PSG secured victory in a penalty shootout, but parts of the festivities descended into violence, with fireworks and flares set off in several locations. The match, played at Budapest’s Puskas Arena on Saturday, May 30, 2026, ended 1-1 after extra time before PSG triumphed 4-3 in the shootout. Ousmane Dembélé converted a second-half penalty to cancel out Kai Havertz’s early opener for Arsenal, and PSG held their nerve from the spot as Arsenal defender Gabriel blasted his decisive kick high over the crossbar.
Police were forced to deploy tear gas to disperse crowds in parts of central Paris as some supporters clashed with security personnel. According to the French Ministry of the Interior, 416 people were arrested nationwide in the early hours of Sunday, including 280 in Paris. Al Jazeera reported that 283 were apprehended in Paris, with it not immediately clear how many were remanded in custody to face further investigation.
Authorities said seven police officers were injured during the disturbances. France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, described the violence as “absolutely unacceptable” and affirmed that authorities had implemented a “very robust, very solid” security arrangement to prevent a repeat of the more serious disorder that followed PSG’s previous European success.

Paris’s iconic Champs-Élysées was swarmed by jubilant fans shortly after the final whistle, with about 20,000 people converging on the famous avenue, police said. Videos circulating on social media showed flares being ignited, electric bikes burning on roads, and revellers smashing the glass of at least one shopfront. Many shops had boarded up their windows before the match to avoid a repeat of disturbances last year when youths ransacked shops on the Champs-Élysées and other streets.
Earlier, clashes were reported around PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where tens of thousands of supporters had gathered to watch the match on giant screens. According to a police spokesperson, an additional 4,000 to 5,000 people loitered outside the stadium, with some throwing projectiles at officers. About 150 people “attempted to enter through one of the gates” at the stadium, but police pushed them back. Some also tried to erect a barricade with rental bikes, which was cleared by police.
French police said six vehicles, two businesses, a bakery, a restaurant, and a bus shelter were damaged during the unrest. A bus shelter near the Champs-Élysées was destroyed. A group of supporters also stormed the Paris ring road, the Boulevard Périphérique, bringing traffic to a halt for a time and setting off flares.
Footage from Paris showed riot instigators lighting fires on roads, setting fire to cars and bicycles. One car was burned on Trocadero Square, located very close to the Eiffel Tower. A group of people even attempted to attack a police station in the posh 8th Arrondissement before law enforcement officers dispersed them. Two people were injured in Paris during the riots, Le Figaro reported—one fell into the Seine River, and the other was wounded with a bladed weapon. Isolated incidents were also observed in other cities across France.
Police confiscated about 24 flares and 100 fireworks during the operations.
Reacting to the unrest, far-right political leader Marine Le Pen criticized the violence, writing on social media that “only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots.” “Only in France does everyone feel compelled to lock themselves in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid being confronted with violence,” she added. Her party colleague, Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally, added: “The operating method is always the same: throwing stones, destroying, looting. Total support for our police, gendarmes and firefighters who are protecting the country against an atmosphere of violence that has become unbearable.”
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the political spectrum, La France Insoumise MP Clémence Guetté asked the Interior Minister “not to spoil the party once again,” adding: “No violent repression: last year’s disaster must not be repeated.”
Meanwhile, PSG players are expected to take part in a victory parade in Paris on Sunday, including celebrations around the Champ-de-Mars near the Eiffel Tower and a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. Between 85,000 and 100,000 people are expected to attend the celebration on the Champ-de-Mars. The team will then head to the Parc des Princes for an evening celebration starting at 7:30 p.m.
The celebrations follow PSG’s historic Champions League triumph over Arsenal, securing the club’s second consecutive European crown and making the French club the first men’s team to retain the trophy since Real Madrid completed their three-year reign from 2016 to 2018. Under manager Luis Enrique, PSG have now won the six shootouts they have contested. Describing the victory, Enrique said: “It’s stronger than last year because we knew before the match just how difficult it would be to play against Arsenal. As a club and a city, it’s incredible to win, and I think we deserved it over the course of the season.”
Last year, PSG’s European championship triumph was marred by clashes that left two people dead, including a 17-year-old boy, and approximately 200 injured, with more than 500 arrests made across France.
Despite the incidents, Nuñez said authorities had put in place a “very robust” security arrangement to prevent a repeat of the more serious disorder that followed PSG’s previous European success. “Our responsibility is to guarantee everyone a festive celebration that is calm and fully secure,” a police spokesperson said. As of the time of this report, authorities continue to review footage and pursue additional suspects involved in the violence.

Nigeria Beat Jamaica To Clinch Fourth Unity Cup Crown In London
Nigeria Beat Jamaica To Clinch Fourth Unity Cup Crown In London
The Super Eagles of Nigeria delivered a commanding performance to defeat Jamaica 3-0 and successfully retain the Unity Cup title, extending their dominance in the competition with a historic fourth triumph.
The highly anticipated final, played at The Valley Stadium in London, saw Eric Chelle’s side produce a disciplined and clinical display to overpower the Reggae Boyz and reaffirm Nigeria’s status as the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
The victory marked another significant milestone for the Super Eagles, who have now won all four editions of the competition since its inception in 2002.
Nigeria made an explosive start to the encounter, taking the lead just three minutes into the match through Alhassan Yusuf. The New England Revolution midfielder reacted quickest after Jamaican goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe parried an initial effort, calmly slotting home the rebound to hand the Super Eagles an early advantage.
The early goal gave Nigeria full control of proceedings as Eric Chelle’s men dictated the tempo, dominated possession, and pinned Jamaica deep inside their half for long spells.
Despite some resistance from the Reggae Boyz, Nigeria’s organised defensive structure denied Jamaica any clear-cut opportunities in the opening half.

The Super Eagles doubled their lead in the 59th minute when Terem Moffi powered home a precise cross from the left flank delivered by impressive winger Femi Azeez, whose creativity and direct running caused constant problems for the Jamaican defence.
Azeez once again proved his growing importance to the national team setup, building on his standout displays earlier in the tournament.
Jamaica attempted to fight back and briefly thought they had a route back into the contest after Kaheim Dixon went down inside the penalty area following contact with Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. However, the referee dismissed appeals for a penalty, much to the frustration of the Caribbean side.
Nigeria remained firmly in control until stoppage time when Alhassan Yusuf completed his brace with a composed finish to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory and cap a memorable night for the midfielder.
The latest triumph further strengthens Nigeria’s Unity Cup dominance, with the team now boasting titles in 2002, 2004, 2025 and 2026.
The Unity Cup, which was revived in 2025 after a 21-year hiatus, has returned as a major Afro-Caribbean invitational tournament featuring nations with strong diaspora communities in London.
For head coach Eric Chelle, the convincing victory provides another positive sign as he continues to assess squad depth and build momentum for upcoming international competitions.
The performance of fringe players and emerging talents also offers fresh optimism for the future of the Super Eagles, with several players making a strong case for regular inclusion in Nigeria’s senior squad.
