No flogging allowed in Lagos schools, commissioner declares
Lagos State Government has reiterated its prohibition of corporal punishment in public schools, emphasising counselling as a more effective disciplinary measure.
The state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, reaffirmed the stance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He stressed that flogging students for indiscipline and other misbehaviours remains strictly prohibited to prevent injuries, fainting or even fatal incidents.
“There is a policy here in Lagos and other parts of the country prohibiting teachers from giving corporal punishment to students/pupils,” Alli-Balogun stated. “Against flogging, we have adopted counselling as a measure of correction.”
While endorsing a non-violent approach, the commissioner noted that minor corrective measures such as kneeling, picking up litter or cutting grass within school premises could be employed as alternatives. He described these as part of “positive reinforcement,” a strategy aimed at shaping student behaviour and encouraging desirable outcomes.

“The idea is to bring to the student’s knowledge, reasons he/she must not misbehave,” he explained. “The counselling is basically to correct.”
Alli-Balogun attributed most cases of student misbehaviour to poor parental upbringing and urged parents to be more involved in their children’s lives.
He further noted that since the ban on flogging, discipline among students has improved significantly, with students becoming more conscious of their actions and the potential consequences.
Lagos State Government officially banned corporal punishment in both public and private schools in 2022. In the same year, it launched the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in Schools to reinforce child safety and promote alternative disciplinary measures.

BREAKING: JAMB Releases 279 Withheld UTME Results After Malpractice Review
BREAKING: JAMB Releases 279 Withheld UTME Results After Malpractice Review
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the release of 279 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results that were earlier withheld for further scrutiny over suspected examination malpractice.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the board’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, who said the decision followed a detailed review of flagged cases during the 2026 UTME exercise.
According to JAMB, the released results are part of ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities recorded in some examination centres across the country.
The board explained that while some candidates were cleared after investigations found no evidence of malpractice, others had their results cancelled after being found culpable.
JAMB noted that the review process remains ongoing for several centres identified through its monitoring system for suspicious activities and reported irregularities during the examination period.

It added that results linked to such centres will remain withheld until investigations are fully concluded.
The examination body warned that any candidate eventually found guilty of malpractice will have their results cancelled in line with its regulations and examination guidelines.
To check their results, candidates were advised to send “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during UTME registration, as part of JAMB’s official result-checking process.
The board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the UTME examination, stressing that strict monitoring systems were in place to curb malpractice and ensure fairness in the conduct of future examinations.
The latest release is part of JAMB’s phased review process for the 2026 UTME, which has seen results released in batches following nationwide examinations conducted earlier in the year.

He reportedly consulted for the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and some state ministries of education.
His expertise covers examination integrity, digital transition, ICT infrastructure, data management, and operational reforms.
According to information released by the Presidency, Aina’s relationship with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, where he gained early exposure to national admissions and examination processes.
One of Nigeria’s Youngest Professors
Professor Aina became a Professor of Computer Engineering at the age of 39, making him one of the youngest professors in Nigeria in the field of engineering and technology.
He is expected to become the youngest Registrar in JAMB’s history when he officially assumes office.
Speaking after his promotion to professor, Aina attributed his success to both hard work and smart work.
“I think hard work, but I think beyond hard work; I think also smart work. It is not just about working hard; you need to work smart,” he said.

Education stakeholders are now watching closely to see how the incoming registrar will consolidate on those reforms while addressing emerging challenges in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions process.

Unpaid Salaries: ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike
Unpaid Salaries: ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike
Academic activities at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) have been paralysed following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unpaid salaries, welfare concerns, and alleged breaches of agreements by the university management.
The union announced the industrial action after negotiations with the university authorities reportedly failed to yield positive results.
In a statement issued by the ASUU-UNICROSS Chairman, Dr Patrick Ushie, the union accused the institution’s management and the Cross River State Government of failing to implement the approved salary structure and welfare packages for academic staff.
According to the statement, lecturers have withdrawn from all academic activities, including lectures, examinations, senate meetings, departmental meetings, and faculty board sessions, until their demands are fully met.
ASUU said the strike became unavoidable after several meetings with management ended without concrete commitments on the issues raised by the union.

Dr Ushie disclosed that the university management admitted it lacked the financial capacity to meet the demands of lecturers.
“They told us that their hands are tied because they do not have the funds to implement our demands,” he stated.
According to him, the management revealed that the institution currently receives about N300 million monthly as government subvention but requires an additional N200 million to fully address the lecturers’ demands.
The union also lamented that a letter sent to Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, seeking intervention had yet to receive any official response.
Among the key demands listed by the union is the immediate implementation of the financial and non-financial components of the 2025 FG-ASUU renegotiated agreement.
ASUU further demanded the payment of all outstanding salaries and arrears resulting from the 35 percent and 25 percent wage awards approved for university workers since January 2023.
The lecturers also called for the prompt payment of monthly salaries on or before the third day of every month to prevent future delays.
In addition, the union demanded payment of earned academic allowances, promotion arrears dating back to July 2011, and other entitlements captured under the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement.
ASUU accused the university authorities of failing to remit over N11.9 million in check-off dues owed to both the local branch and the national body of the union since 2017.
The union also alleged that deductions from cooperative contributions and welfare levies belonging to staff members had not been remitted as required.
According to ASUU, the indefinite strike will remain in force until all demands are fully addressed by the university management and relevant government authorities.
The development has triggered concerns among students and parents over possible disruptions to the academic calendar at UNICROSS, especially amid growing industrial disputes in Nigeria’s public university system.
Efforts to get a response from the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Francesca Bassey, were unsuccessful as calls and text messages sent to her mobile line were not answered at the time of filing this report.
The latest industrial action adds to ongoing concerns about poor funding, unpaid allowances, and welfare challenges facing lecturers in many Nigerian public universities.
